This year, Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) Co-Chairs, the United Kingdom and Canada, and Bloomberg Philanthropies are convening a series of Solutions Dialogues, hosted by PPCA members and partners around the world. These Dialogues will bring together government, business, finance and civil society leaders to raise ambition and accelerate action on the phase-out of unabated coal power, to keep 1.5°C within reach.

The series will begin with a High-Level Dialogue at London Climate Action Week on 24th June. Marking the year when the UK closes its last remaining coal power plant, the High-Level Dialogue aims to send a clear message on the need to accelerate coal phase-out globally. In London’s Battersea Power Station, Ministers and prominent global figures will showcase the key actions they are taking and define the priority next steps for an effective, just transition. This will be followed by a series of Regional Dialogues held across the globe throughout 2024. The first one will take place in Santiago, Chile.

    These Regional Dialogues will:

    • Share innovative solutions from policy experts and lessons learnt from first movers
    • Identify ways to unlock finance for the coal to clean transition
    • Offer guidance and best practice on how to develop 1.5°C -aligned coal phase-out plans.

    Key Themes

    EarlyRetirement
    Early Retirement

We will address the complex challenges of retiring coal power plants before the end of their lifetimes: through securing funding, enacting effective policies and regulations that reflect the impact of coal plants whilst allowing fair market competition.

    JustTransition
    Just transition

We will showcase how workers and communities can be protected in the transition from coal to clean whilst boosting local development: through the implementation of place-based policies, people-centred planning processes, and effective financial mechanisms.

    SecuritySupply
    Security of Supply

We will establish how to secure the supply of electricity throughout the transition from coal to clean: through updating energy plans, advancing grid operation and market design, and building renewables, energy storage, and grids at the pace and scale required to meet climate goals.
