This year, Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) Co-Chairs, the United Kingdom and Canada, and Bloomberg Philanthropies are convening a series of Solutions Dialogues, hosted around the world. These Dialogues will bring together government, business, finance and civil society leaders to raise ambition and accelerate action on the phase-out of unabated coal power, to keep 1.5°C within reach.

The series began with a High-Level Dialogue at London Climate Action Week on 24th June. Marking the year when the UK closes its last remaining coal power plant, the High-Level Dialogue sent a clear message on the need to accelerate coal phase-out globally.

Now, the Solutions Dialogues are going global, with Regional Dialogues being held across the globe throughout 2024.

The following Regional Dialogues have been confirmed so far, with more to be announced:

    • Santiago, Chile in August, co-hosted by the government of Chile and Innovation Regions for a Just Energy Transition (IKI-JET),
    • New York, United States during New York Climate Week in September, hosted by the Global Renewables Alliance,
    • Jakarta, Indonesia, during Indonesia Sustainability Forum in September, hosted by the government of Indonesia,
    • Singapore, during the Singapore International Energy Week in October, co-hosted by GFANZ APAC Network and Bloomberg Philanthropies.

    Key Themes

    EarlyRetirement
    Early Retirement

We will address the complex challenges of retiring coal power plants before the end of their lifetimes: through securing funding, enacting effective policies and regulations that reflect the impact of coal plants whilst allowing fair market competition.

    JustTransition
    Just transition

We will showcase how workers and communities can be protected in the transition from coal to clean whilst boosting local development: through the implementation of place-based policies, people-centred planning processes, and effective financial mechanisms.

    SecuritySupply
    Security of Supply

We will establish how to secure the supply of electricity throughout the transition from coal to clean: through updating energy plans, advancing grid operation and market design, and building renewables, energy storage, and grids at the pace and scale required to meet climate goals.
