Led by the Governments of Canada and the United Kingdom, the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) – which has over 165 members, including 33 financial institution members, and represents USD 17 trillion in assets – is aligning itself with the latest science and analysis and responding to the United Nations Secretary General’s call to “end the world’s deadly addiction to coal”. In this session, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Government of Canada, Terry Duguid, will:

  • Explore how the PPCA is responding to the call to drive and boost momentum for global efforts to phase out emissions from coal power needed to meet Paris Agreement targets
  • Examine how private financial institutions must demonstrate credible action towards net-zero commitments and the work the Alliance is doing in this space
  • Evaluate what still needs to be done to move away from unabated thermal coal power around the world
