Advancing International Cooperation to Implement Just Energy Transition in Coal Regions

Time: 14:00-15:00 GST (Dubai)

Venue: Just Transition Pavilion, COP28 Blue Zone

Organisers: International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership (SEA ETP), Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA)

Transitioning away from coal-based energy systems and coal-dependent local economies is critical in combatting climate change. However, ensuring a just and equitable change is challenging, particularly in the Global South. The panel will discuss how various partnerships, including the Just Coal Transition Platform and the Powering Past Coal Alliance, foster collaboration and knowledge exchange across countries. It will also feature the new JET-CR Knowledge Hub as a digital ‘one-stop shop’ on just energy transition. The session will bring together stakeholders from governments, labour, civil society and international organisations to reflect on their expectations for, and concrete examples of, such collaborations.

Speakers include representatives from the Government of Germany and Colombia, International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), the International Labor Organisation (ILO), Climate Action Network International, the Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership (SEA ETP) and the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA).
