Join the Powering Past Coal Alliance, Germany’s IKI Just Energy Transition in Coal Regions and Grantham Research Institute to discuss one of the most important enablers to the just transition away from coal: finance.

We are convening experts from private and development finance institutions, the International Labour Organisation, academia, and other initiatives supporting on-the-ground just transition efforts in coal regions across the world. Speakers will discuss the barriers and opportunities for scaling up finance to drive coal phase-out while ensuring that coal-dependent communities and workers are protected. They will also outline financial mechanisms for managed coal phase-out in key emerging and developing economies, such as Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETPs).

The transition away from coal needs to happen rapidly and urgently to keep temperature rise to 1.5oC. Yet, phasing out coal is not without challenges, and transitioning to clean energy must be implemented in a just and inclusive manner to mitigate the impacts on communities and workers in the coal power sector.

Learning from coal transitions of the past, governments and businesses increasingly understand that a just transition is achievable and can deliver resilient, good-paying jobs and drive economic development, but it requires clear future planning, looking for new opportunities, and ensuring social security for all affected parties. The real test for the just transition lies in major emerging and developing economies, where the need for investment in emission reductions and climate resilience is most urgent, but access to funding can be a challenge, and social safeguards are less present.
