SUBNATIONAL LEADERSHIP IN PHASING OUT FOSSIL FUELS AND ACCELERATING A JUST ENERGY TRANSITION

SUBNATIONAL LEADERSHIP IN PHASING OUT FOSSIL FUELS AND ACCELERATING A JUST ENERGY TRANSITION

Date: 6 December

Time: 13:00-14:00 GST

Venue: Multilevel action and Urbanisation Pavilion, Thematic Arena 3, Blue Zone

Organizers: Under2 and C40

State, regional and city governments globally are taking bold action on climate change, including courageous steps to reduce fossil fuel use across energy, buildings, transport, agriculture and industry. In addition, at the state and regional level, governments have important policy and regulatory levers to curb fossil fuel expansion and expand clean energy production. And as leaders closest to their communities and businesses, they are perfectly positioned to support an energy transition that is just and equitable.

In this session, we will:

  • explore the existing and potential leadership of states, regions and cities on fossil fuel phase out;
  • identify opportunities and barriers to fully enable subnationals to take bold action on fossil fuels; and
  • identify key solutions and collaborative opportunities to pursue.

Julia Skorupska, Head of the PPCA Secretariat, will be moderating the panel discussion on global cooperative action at the subnational level to phase out fossil fuels with representatives from IRENA, IEA, South Australia and more.
