COP30, Belem, Brazil
Action Agenda Event
Special Event Room 1 – São Francisco, Area C, first floor
17 November • 9:30-10:20 (local time)
Organised by:

Significant global progress has been made in the coal-to-clean transition, reflecting the growing recognition of its economic and social benefits. In 2024, global coal fleet growth slowed to its weakest pace in over 20 years, and coal power capacity under development has decreased by nearly 65% since the Paris Agreement was signed. In OECD countries, generation from coal power has halved since 2015, while in emerging economies, with younger coal fleets and high dependence on coal, pioneering programmes for early coal retirement are being advanced.
Yet there is still much work to be done to address the challenges, scale solutions and accelerate action to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and build the modern, secure and resilient energy systems we need.
This high-level event, in partnership with RMI and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ), will bring together ministers and change-makers to showcase global progress, highlight solutions and announce new developments. Speakers representing both developing and developed countries, financial institutions and international organisations will make new commitments, highlight solutions and present a new plan to accelerate coal transitions developed by the Powering Past Coal Alliance under the Action Agenda.
