Side Event at G20 Energy Transition Working Group and Ministerial Meetings

7 October • 10:45 am – 12:45 pm (Local Time)

uMhlanga Coastal Hotel, Durban, South Africa

The transition from coal to clean provides an opportunity to advance economic development, build new industries and create new high-quality jobs. However, to ensure that the transition is just, the needs of workers and communities who have depended on coal for their incomes must be carefully considered and planned for. Thanks to new efforts in financing coal-to-clean retirement projects and country-led just transition planning, important lessons are emerging on how to unlock the concessional and private finance needed to deliver just transitions.

This subject is the focus of the upcoming High-Level Dialogue on Financing a Just Transition ‘Lessons, Experiences and Opportunities, From Coal to Green’, held on the sidelines of the G20 Energy Transition Working Group and Ministerial Meetings. The high-level dialogue is co-hosted by the Presidential Climate Commission of South Africa and the Coal Transition Commission which was founded by the governments of France and Indonesia to accelerate just transitions from coal to clean.

This session will highlight real-world experiences from South Africa, Indonesia, and Canada, offering practical insights into how energy finance and social justice can come together in coal transitions. Through keynote remarks, country-led panels, and open discussion, participants will explore how different actors can best contribute to a just coal transition finance, drawing on their mandates, capacities, and contexts. The event will gather diverse participants including ministers, senior officials from national and local governments, the private sector, development banks, trade unions, and civil society.

PPCA Declaration

The PPCA Declaration was launched on 16 November 2017, at COP23 in Bonn. It sets out our collective commitment to accelerate the transition from coal to clean energy. We commit to achieve that phase-out in a sustainable and economically inclusive way, including appropriate support for workers and communities. We will also encourage our peers to join us in the Powering Past Coal Alliance to build a better world for our kids and grandkids.
