On the sidelines of the Ukraine Recovery Conference in London (21-22 June), the PPCA and Ukrainian Ministry of Energy will host an event aimed to present Ukraine’s ambitious goals to build a coal-free, decentralized, renewable energy system and to increase international support and collaboration required to achieve them.
The energy system in Ukraine suffered severe damage due to Russian attacks, resulting in the disruption of vital services and posing a threat to the lives of Ukrainian citizens, including the recent destruction of a major dam and hydroelectric power plant on the front lines of the war. However, instead of wavering on its ambitious climate commitments, Ukraine actively responded by embarking on a transformative journey towards a less coal-intensive and more decentralized energy system based on renewable sources such as solar and wind. This strategic shift not only aims to reduce emissions but will also ensure greater energy security and safeguard the well-being of its citizens.
The compelling discussion shed light on Ukraine’s new Energy Strategy and heard directly from a range of speakers, including the Minister and Deputy Minister of Energy, as they unveiled the key components and objectives of this visionary plan. The event also gathered invaluable insights from local mayors and NGOs who led the way in spearheading the transition to a more just and safer energy system.
Participants discovered the innovative approaches, policies, and technologies that are driving Ukraine’s shift towards a sustainable and secure energy future and learned about the remarkable resilience demonstrated by Ukraine’s government, as well as its commitment to combatting climate change. It was an opportunity to discuss ways to increase international collaboration and support, including through the PPCA, to ensure the success of Ukraine’s energy transition.
