One year ago, governments from around the world joined Canada and the United Kingdom at COP23 for the launch of the Powering Past Coal Alliance. Since then, the Alliance has grown to 75 members—and momentum continues to build.

By joining the Alliance, governments and organizations have committed to taking one of the most impactful actions towards meeting the temperature goal of the Paris Agreement: phasing out unabated coal-fired electricity and transitioning to clean energy.

To celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Alliance’s launch, Canada and the United Kingdom are proud to host an event at COP 24.

Accelerating the Global Coal Transition

  • Where: Warmia Room (Room 3)
  • When: December 13, 13:15 - 14:45
  • Chair: Nick Mabey, CEO, E3G
  • Speakers:
    • Claire Perry, Minister of State for Energy and Clean Growth, United Kingdom;
    • Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Canada;
    • Ailun Yang, Bloomberg Philanthropies;

The event will be an opportunity for the Alliance to come together to discuss ongoing efforts to phase out coal, celebrate progress to date, and share experiences with existing members and other interested jurisdictions.

The event is part of a broader “Coal Free Day” taking place at the United Kingdom Pavilion, where we will showcase progress on coal phase-out, exhibits and presentations from different actors involved in the transition to clean energy.
