Supporting countries through the coal transition
The Powering Past Coal Alliance helps coal-dependent economies establish the partnerships and the credibility needed to transition away from coal – increasing energy security and economic growth while addressing climate risks.
Getting the right people around the table
Every country’s transition is different. The Alliance connects governments with the trusted partners – other governments, financial institutions and technical experts – best placed to help design solutions that fit their economy, their energy system and their political realities.
- Working with government ministries, regulators and utilities to develop policy options and regulatory frameworks that enable a reliable, affordable and just transition.
- Direct introductions to public and private financial institutions, and technical specialists whose support can make early coal retirement or repurposing viable.
- Building governments’ institutional capacity and convening the right stakeholders to plan and deliver the transition.
Practical, decision-ready global insights
The coal transition is complex, and while there is no one-size-fits-all solution, lessons learned elsewhere can be valuable signposts. The PPCA translates the experience of governments and organisations at the forefront of coal transition into practical, decision-ready guidance – so countries can move faster, with courage, and avoid common pitfalls.
- Peer-to-peer learning opportunities among governments, utilities and financial institutions – real, practical conversations about what works and what doesn’t.
- Case studies and technical reports outlining real-world policy and finance solutions from across the world: from just transition planning and investment, to deploying alternatives to coal power and modernising the grid, to structuring financing mechanisms for early retirement.
