The economic and climate benefits of the coal-to-clean transition are clear. Coal is the most polluting fuel, and transitioning away from it protects our climate and health. It offers an opportunity for countries to build more competitive green supply chains, access lower energy prices, increase energy security and fuel economic growth.
This event will showcase recent progress and practical solutions to advance the coal transition in emerging economies with a particular focus on Latin America, an emerging leader in this space. Countries in the region are showing real leadership and providing inspiration to the rest of the world through pioneering steps to develop innovative policies and mechanisms to retire coal plants early and provide for affected communities. The region also stands out as the first with no new coal-fired power plants under active consideration.
Co-organised by the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA), Climate Investment Funds (CIF), and the Energy Transition Partnership (ETP), this event will bring together government, business and finance sector representatives to share lessons learnt from these efforts and recommendations for priority next steps for scaling them up to build a pipeline of coal to clean projects. It will also examine the role of concessional and blended finance in catalysing private investment and highlight practical steps that can be taken to ensure that workers and communities are supported through a just and equitable transition.
