We are a global alliance of national and sub-national governments, businesses and organisations working to advance the transition away from unabated* coal power generation.
Together, we recognise that shifting away from coal power generation is essential for clean air; healthy communities; sustainable economic growth; and a safe climate. A timely transition is necessary to meet the international climate change commitment to keep global temperature increases well below 2°C and pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5°C.
Our commitment to working together is informed by science-based benchmarks that show that EU and OECD countries must phase out unabated coal-fired electricity generation no later than 2030, with the rest of the world no later than 2050 to limit global warming and the impacts of climate change.
By joining the Alliance, members commit to the principles outlined in the Declaration. Together, we will support the global transition to clean energy.
Note: In September 2019, the PPCA responded to the growing demand for support on the transition from coal to clean energy by enabling membership for national governments that are in the process of developing and implementing ambitious actions on coal phase-out. Further information about membership criteria and the formation of a Declaration Group is provided in this PPCA news article.
* Unabated coal power generation refers to the use of coal without any technologies to substantially reduce its CO2 emissions, such as carbon capture and storage.
